Keagan woke in the early hours before dawn. Outside the window of the inn, the sky was paling to gray, the first twitter of birdsong wafting into the room. In her arms, Shay slumbered peacefully, a long, lean warmth that Keagan wanted to wrap herself around forever. She smiled as she brushed her lips over the soft skin of Shay’s shoulder, not wanting to wake her but also wishing she would wake up. The exotic scent of her skin, a mix of spice and wind, filled Keagan’s senses as she trailed kisses along Shay’s collarbone and up her neck.

Shay made a soft sound, a whimper of pleasure and delight, pressing back into Keagan’s embrace. Nuzzling her ear, Keagan drew her fingertips down the slope of Shay’s small breast, toying deliberately with the soft tip. “Good morning,” she murmured.

“So far.” Shay agreed readily.

Keagan chuckled and kissed her again. Shay made a move to roll over, but Keagan tightened her grip. “Let me,” she whispered. “Please.”

Shay resisted briefly, then acquiesced, relaxing as she put her hand back on Keagan’s hip, the only part she could reach to caress.

Keagan caught Shay’s earlobe between her teeth, nibbling as she ran her palm down over Shay’s flat stomach, raking her fingers through the soft patch of hair. “Please,” she murmured again, pleading.

Shay laughed low in her throat and shifted slightly, parting her legs to grant access. Keagan’s breath caught as she slipped her fingers between them, wetness bathing them as she fondled Shay with gentle intensity.

Shay moaned, head going back against Keagan’s shoulder, trembling as her pleasure built. Keagan loved the low, guttural sound she incited, the way Shay shuddered uncontrollably at her peak. She held her as Shay melted into her arms, feeling such a combination of adoration, tenderness, and caring that tears came to her eyes.

“I love you,” she murmured, overwhelmed by the emotion choking her throat. And then she froze as Shay stilled and rolled over to face her. “Sorry,” she said, feeling awkward as hell. “Way too soon.”

“No.” Shay put her fingers beneath Keagan’s chin and lifted her head so she could look into her eyes. “I love you, too. And maybe you’re right. Maybe this is all happening way too quickly, and it’ll burn so hot and fast, nothing will be left at the end, but I know how I feel right now. And I’ve never felt this way with anyone else.”

Relieved, Keagan drew her close and kissed her, trying to pour all her devotion into her kiss so Shay would know that she hadn’t spoken lightly, and that this didn’t happen to her often. Or ever. And as Shay pressed her down onto the sheets, hands and mouth roaming over her with delicious intent, Keagan surrendered to her and to the depth of her emotion, feeling as if she’d finally found a home. Growing up on the streets, and then being placed in the Academy before going on to the marshals, she’d never known this feeling, but it was the only way she could describe it.
